14 Apr After the storm: Back online
Hello dear friends and followers,
The storm that hit us last Tuesday evening with wind speeds of more than 200km/h (Manukau Heads) left us without power and internet and only limited cell phone coverage. Power was restored yesterday afternoon, 3 days later. Our server and emails were likewise down for that period of time.
Only our chickens and ducks have lost their accommodation so far, but are all safe and sound. No real other damage.
Out thoughts are with those that have suffered far more damage than us, that were left without house or roof.
We have had a small generator powering water, fridge and freezer. Other than that, life continues, water is in the tank, gas still allows us to cook and candles give us light apart from the various torches.
Many parts of Auckland are still without power and we have offered our B&B to locals that were in need. We are now hosting a mother with her three young children free of charge and are also offering showers or some hot food for people that need it.
Auckland Civil Defense has now started to know on doors to check people’s situation and organising portaloos to prevent sewage systems overflowing. Local churches and the fire brigade are also offering showers, meals and cell phone charging facilities.
The power companies are working day and night to restore power but are still facing heavy rain and strong winds. There have been reports of just repaired powerlines being damaged again by newly fallen trees and transformers blowing up again due to short circuits.
